What is CID (Crime Investigation Department)?


The full form of CID is Crime Investigation Department which is known as Crime Investigation Department in a state. CID is the investigation and intelligence department of the police in a state. This department is entrusted with the investigation of murder, rioting, kidnapping, theft etc. The CID was established in 1902 by the British Government on the recommendation of the Police Commission. Police personnel are given special training before joining it. The responsibility of investigation is entrusted to this institution by the concerned state government and sometimes by the High Court of that state.
What is CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation)?


The Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI is an agency of the Central Government in India, which investigates national and international crimes such as murder, scams and corruption cases and crimes of national interest on behalf of the Government of India. The CBI agency was established under the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1963 on the basis of the recommendation of the "Santhanam Committee" constituted for the prevention of corruption but later it was transferred under the Ministry of Personnel. Its headquarter is in New Delhi.


The Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946 has given the powers of investigation to the CBI. The Government of India orders the CBI to investigate cases in the state with the consent of the state government. However, the Supreme Court and the High Court can order the CBI to investigate a criminal case in any state of the country without the consent of the state government.


Major difference between CID and CBI
1. The area of operation of CID is small (only one state), while the area of operation of CBI is large (whole country and abroad).


2. Whatever cases come to the CID, they are handed over by the state government and the High Court, while the cases to the CBI are handed over by the Central Government, High Court and Supreme Court.


3. CID investigates other criminal cases in the state including criminal cases like rioting, murder, kidnapping, theft and assault cases while CBI investigates cases of national and international level scams, fraud, murder, institutional scams, etc. Investigates at home and abroad.
